A GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING SPORTS CAR TIRES Learn what sets sports car tires apart from the rest

Explore sports car tires and learn whether they are right for your vehicle.

DO SPORTS CARS NEED SPECIAL TIRES?

Sports cars are vehicles designed to put performance first, emphasizing precision handling and superior acceleration and speed. Performance tires are highly recommended to maximize a sports car's potential. They are designed to provide more control, better handling, and superior traction and grip so drivers can chase that thrill they’re looking for when they get behind the wheel of a sports car.

Sports car tires vs. race tires

While sports car tires generally balance performance with versatility, race tires are designed with one goal in mind: speed. Race tires are meant for very specific environments and often sacrifice longevity in favor of higher performance. In some cases, they might only last a single race – as little as three hours!  The tread on race tires is very shallow and flat and not recommended for the everyday driver. On the other hand, sports car tires (also known as performance tires) are considered suitable for street use, should last much longer, and adapt to wet and dry conditions.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A SPORTS CAR TIRE

If you’re shopping for sports car tires, performance tires, high-performance tires, or ultra-high-performance tires are the way to go. The Bridgestone Potenza and Firestone Firehawk lines of tires are two of the more popular performance options with a range of  sizes to meet your unique specifications. Here’s what to look for in a set of performance tires:

TREAD PATTERN

TREAD PATTERN

Tread patterns are optimized with different priorities in mind. For sports cars, an asymmetrical or directional/symmetrical pattern is ideal. Asymmetrical tread patterns have two separate and distinct patterns: an outer pattern designed for grip and handling and an inner pattern optimized to handle wet roads and prevent hydroplaning.     Symmetrical tread pattern tires can only be rotated using a front-to-back and back-to-front pattern, while asymmetrical tires give you the added flexibility to rotate side to side.

SPEED RATING

SPEED RATING

If you’re shopping for a sports car or a luxury vehicle, speed capabilities are probably of interest to you. A performance tire with a speed rating of “V,” “W,” or “Y” are all considered high with maximum speeds of up 149 to 186 mph (240-300 kph). You can find the speed rating as part of the tire size code located on the inner sidewall of the tire. It should look like this: P215/60 R15 91V. The speed rating is the final letter in the sequence, in this case, V. Check your manufacturer’s specifications to find the right speed rating for your vehicle.

FUEL EFFICIENCY

FUEL EFFICIENCY

Even if fuel efficiency isn’t your top priority with performance tires, it’s still worth knowing what to expect from the tires you choose. Gas mileage, road noise, and tread life won’t be optimized with sports car tires, but if the vehicle is seasonal or only driven occasionally, those sacrifices might balance out in the end.
